June 30 -July 12    The Summer Theatre - Meredith Village

GREASE!

Here is Rydell High's senior class of 1959; duck-tailed, hot-rodding "Burger Palace Boys" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "greaser" Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as Greased Lightnin', It's Raining on Prom Night, Alone at the Drive-In Movie recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. An 8-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals place Grease among the world's most popular musicals.

July 14 - 26    The Summer Theatre - Meredith Village

THE SOUND OF MUSIC!

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.

July 28 - August 9   The Summer Theatre - Meredith Village

CATS

Based on the universally popular poetry of T.S. Eliot, Cats tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle cats at which time one special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside layer. A true musical theatre phenomenon, Cats opened at London's New London Theatre on May 11, 1981 and ran for a record-setting 21 years. Cat's London success was nearly matched on Broadway where it ran at the Wintergarden Theatre for just over 18 years. Filled with stupendous songs ("Memory") and thrilling dancing, people young and old will be blown by this musical extravaganza!

Bittersweet romance, tender farce, and a shot of history for good measure. Taylor gives us the Stott family in the north of England during World War II, underscored with music of the era. Helen, the eldest daughter expects little in the way of love, but the appearance of a soldier named Norman causes a seismic shift in the way she sees herself and her world. Does love give us the freedom to be transformed, even in the midst of turbulent times?

July 29, 7 pm - “By His Deeds, Measure Yours:” Making the Case for Sacrifice on the American Home Front

Wright Museum of World War II - Wolfeboro

Lecture - James J. Kimble, Seton Hall University

During WWII, the Office of Civilian Defense mounted an ambitious home front campaign intended to get Americans to make sacrifices in support of the war effort. One of the more graphic elements of the campaign depicted dead or dying soldiers, intended as a way for those back home to keep the privations they were asked to endure in the larger context of the sacrifices that Americans were making on the frontlines.
